The coffee of the Tarrazú region is one of the most recognized in Costa Rica and in the world and represents 40% of the national production. This production is between 1,200 and 1,900 meters above sea level, in ideal climate and soil conditions for cultivation. Most of the plantations are under shade, with different trees in the area. A year in Tarrazú is split into two well-defined seasons, rainy and dry. The rainy season lasts for seven months (May to November), during which time coffee plants are growing; the dry season is from December to April. Harvest time is a five-month period from November to March that coincides nicely with dry season. This well-defined climate pattern is ideal for growing coffee and results in high-quality coffee cherries that are uniform in ripeness. The region of Tarrazú has a long-standing reputation for quality and excels in the production of high graded coffee, with many awards of the prestigious Cup of Excellence.
